Join My Journey: Writing a Domestic Suspense Novel

Updated: 4 days ago

Writing a domestic suspense novel isn't just about crafting a story; it’s about weaving a tapestry of tension, emotion, and unexpected twists that keep readers turning the page. As I embark on this journey, I want to share my experiences, insights, and the challenges I face along the way. Whether you’re trying to begin your first novel or you're a published author, I hope my journey inspires you to explore the thrilling world of domestic suspense.

Your story may begin a lot like this: a rough sketch that changes but will retain many essential ideas.

Understanding Domestic Suspense

Domestic suspense is a subgenre of thriller that focuses on the psychological and emotional aspects of suspense within a domestic setting. This genre often explores themes of trust, betrayal, and the complexities of relationships. Here are some key elements that define domestic suspense:

  • Intimate Settings: The story usually unfolds in familiar environments such as homes, neighborhoods, or small towns.

  • Complex Characters: Characters are often multi-dimensional, with hidden motives and secrets that drive the plot.

  • Psychological Tension: The suspense is built through psychological manipulation, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear.

  • Everyday Life: The plot often revolves around ordinary situations that escalate into extraordinary events.

By understanding these elements, you can create a compelling narrative that resonates with readers—familiar but with a fresh twist.

I call this the nasty notebook: one because it isn't neatly written, and two because it often contains nasty bits . All of it quick and dirty and subject to sweeping change.

Finding Inspiration

Inspiration can come from various sources. For my novel, I draw from personal experiences, news stories, and even conversations with friends. Here are some tips for finding inspiration:

  • Observe Your Surroundings: Pay attention to the people and events in your life. A simple interaction can spark a story idea.

  • Read Widely: Explore other domestic suspense novels to understand what works and what doesn’t. Analyze the techniques used by successful authors.

  • Keep a Journal: Document your thoughts, observations, and ideas. This can serve as a valuable resource when you’re looking for inspiration.

When you're typing a draft and an idea strikes you in the moment, take a minute to capture your thought by making a note. You'll be sure to return to it, and you're likely to lose it if you don't.

Developing Your Characters

Characters are the heart of any story, especially in domestic suspense. Here’s how to create compelling characters:

  • Backstory: Develop a rich backstory for each character. Understand their motivations, fears, and desires.

  • Flaws: Give your characters flaws that make them relatable. This adds depth and complexity to their personalities.

  • Relationships: Explore the dynamics between characters. How do their relationships influence the plot?

For example, in my novel, the protagonist has a seemingly perfect life, but her relationship with her husband is fraught with tension. This conflict drives the narrative and keeps readers engaged.

Crafting the Plot

A well-structured plot is essential for maintaining suspense. Here’s a simple framework to help you outline your story:

  1. Introduction: Introduce your main character and establish the setting. Hint at underlying tensions.

  2. Inciting Incident: Present a triggering event that disrupts the protagonist's life. This could be a mysterious disappearance or a shocking revelation.

  3. Rising Action: Build tension through a series of escalating conflicts. Introduce obstacles that challenge the protagonist.

  4. Climax: Create a turning point where the protagonist faces their greatest challenge. This is where the suspense reaches its peak.

  5. Falling Action: Resolve the conflicts and reveal the truth behind the suspenseful events.

  6. Conclusion: Tie up loose ends and leave readers with a thought-provoking ending.

Don't throw anything away. I was so disappointed when I couldn't find my tiny notebook with daily word count progress . Referring back to your process is so valuable. Maybe it will turn up. But I found these.

Building Suspense

Suspense is the lifeblood of a domestic suspense novel. Here are some techniques to build suspense effectively:

  • Foreshadowing: Drop subtle hints about future events. This keeps readers guessing and engaged.

  • Pacing: Control the pacing of your narrative. Slow down during tense moments to heighten anxiety, and speed up during action scenes.

  • Unreliable Narrator: Consider using an unreliable narrator to create doubt and intrigue. This can lead readers to question what is real and what is not.

Writing the First Draft

Once you have your outline, it’s time to write the first draft. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Set a Routine: Establish a writing routine that works for you. Consistency is key to making progress.

  • Don’t Edit While Writing: Focus on getting your ideas down on paper. You can always revise later.

  • Stay True to Your Voice: Write in a style that feels authentic to you. This will make your story more engaging.

This makes me think of the scene in The Shining—except there's a story here, not the same sentence again and again.

Revising and Editing

After completing your first draft, the real work begins. Here’s how to approach the revision process:

  • Take a Break: Step away from your manuscript for a few days. This will give you a fresh perspective when you return.

  • Read Aloud: Reading your work aloud can help you catch awkward phrasing and identify areas that need improvement.

  • Seek Feedback: Share your manuscript with trusted friends or writing groups. Constructive criticism can help you refine your story.

The Importance of Research

Research is crucial in creating a believable and engaging domestic suspense novel. Here are some areas to consider:

  • Setting: If your story takes place in a specific location, research the area to ensure accuracy.

  • Psychology: Understanding psychological concepts can help you create realistic characters and situations.

  • Legal Aspects: If your plot involves crime or legal issues, familiarize yourself with the relevant laws and procedures.

Marketing Your Novel

Once your novel is complete, it’s time to think about marketing. Here are some strategies to consider:

  • Build an Online Presence: Create a website or blog to showcase your work and connect with readers.

  • Social Media: Use social media platforms to engage with your audience and share updates about your writing journey.

  • Book Launch: Plan a launch event to promote your novel. This could be a virtual event or an in-person gathering.

Writing a domestic suspense novel is a thrilling journey filled with challenges and rewards. By understanding the genre, developing compelling characters, and crafting a gripping plot, you can create a story that captivates readers.
